How it works
Three steps to clear vision
Assessment, surgery and aftercare, with the same surgeon throughout.
- 1
Assessment
At the personal assessment, the surgeon examines your eyes and judges whether and when an operation makes sense. Together we discuss the planned procedure, any particular features of your eyes and the lens implants suitable for you.
Even if you already have a diagnosis or a referral, this examination is an essential part of planning your operation.
- 2
Surgery
Cataract surgery takes place at the Hospital of the Brothers of St John of God, Vienna. An experienced team of doctors and qualified nursing staff is on hand, in a hospital setting with the appropriate medical infrastructure.
- 3
Aftercare
After the operation there are usually two follow-up examinations with the surgeon. We check healing and the result of the operation. Once aftercare is complete, your regular check-ups can continue with your usual eye doctor.
Our speciality
Our speciality: cataracts
Our practice concentrates on eye surgery, and on cataract surgery in particular. We are convinced that surgical quality rests on experience, routine and a high number of regularly performed operations.
An essential part of our approach is the personal assessment by the surgeon who will later operate. Even if you already have a diagnosis or a referral, we examine every patient ourselves. Only then can we judge your individual starting situation and plan the operation accordingly.
Medical quality, safety and personal advice come first. We recommend only those examinations and treatments that make medical sense in your case. Nobody is pushed towards an operation or a premium lens.
A cataract is the eye's own lens turning cloudy. Surgery replaces it with a clear artificial lens.

Common questions
Answers before you ask
The ten questions patients ask us most, in the order of your treatment.
When should a cataract be operated on?
When the clouding of the lens limits your daily life: reading, driving, glare, or glasses that no longer help. There is no fixed age or stage at which surgery becomes compulsory. At the assessment we judge together whether and when the operation makes sense for you.
How quickly can I get a surgery date?
Assessment appointments are usually available within days to a few weeks. After the assessment we normally offer you a possible surgery date within a few days. With private scheduling, the operation can take place at short notice when the conditions allow it.
Do I need an assessment if I already have a diagnosis?
Yes. Even with a diagnosis or a referral we want to examine you ourselves, to judge your starting situation and plan the operation accordingly. The measurements for your lens implant have to be taken and assessed by the surgeon in any case.
Which lens implant is right for me?
That depends on your eyes and on your visual habits. Monofocal lenses give one sharp distance, EDOF and trifocal lenses more independence from glasses, toric lenses correct astigmatism. The recommendation follows the measurements from your assessment and your daily life. More on the page Which lens implants are there?
How does cataract surgery work?
The operation takes place at the Hospital of the Brothers of St John of God, Vienna, usually under anaesthetic drops, under general anaesthesia if you prefer. The clouded lens is removed through a tiny incision and replaced with the lens implant calculated beforehand. The operation itself takes about 15 minutes, and you go home the same day. Full details on the page Cataract surgery.
Is the operation painful?
No. The eye is numbed with drops. Most patients notice light and colours, but no pain. Mild scratchiness in the first days is normal.
When will I see well again after the operation?
This varies from person to person. Vision usually improves within the first days and settles over several weeks. We judge the final result at the final follow-up. We make no blanket promises; your surgeon tells you at each check where you stand.
When can I drive, work or do sport again?
Driving as soon as your vision meets the legal standard; we check this at the first follow-up. Screen work and light activities are usually possible after a few days. Heavy lifting, swimming and sauna wait about two weeks. Guidelines on the page Aftercare.
What does cataract surgery cost?
Surgery with a monofocal lens costs from €3,120 per eye, the assessment €250, the two follow-ups €150 and €250. Without Austrian health insurance and for general anaesthesia, surcharges apply. Every fee is on the costs page.
Will my private supplementary insurance cover the costs?
With private supplementary insurance that includes inpatient Sonderklasse cover, the costs of cataract surgery are often covered in full. The actual cover depends on your individual policy. Confirm it with your insurer before surgery; we provide all the documents.
